Dollar or Piece of 4 Merks, 1682

History

Scotland's equivalent of the English crown. The orginal value of the merk minted in the reign of Charles II. was 13s. 4d. It was raised to 14s. in 1681 – the value of the 4 merk piece or Scottish dollar rose accordingly from 53s 4d to 56s.
