Called also Sovereign or Double Ryal. English Gold coin first produced under Henry VIII (1485-1509) continued through 1662 when the last hammered coins of the series were produced under Charles II. Replaced, at a value of 20 s, by the milled Guinea gold coin in 1663.

A Half Laurel, called also Half-Sovereign or Double Crown with the value of ten shillings was first produced under Henry VIII (1485-1509) and continued through 1662 when the last hammered Half Laurels appeared. A version of larger sized silver double crowns appeared under Charles I.
