Four Pence or Groat, William III, 1700.

History

Groat or Fourpence. Following the 13th-century Venetian grosso Dutch "groot" or English "groat" became the term for all thick silver coins, as opposed to thin silver coins such as deniers or pennies. The Dutch word synonymous for "great" made the term fit for coins. In England the fourpence piece entered the category.
