Gulden, Guilder, Florin. Rivalling the Thaler a coin (or unit of account) in several European countries and territories, usually underneath the value of a Thaler, yet (like the Thaler) of no unified value. The name guilder refers to the original gold coins, the regular abbreviation fl. to the "florin" reminding of the floren first minted in 1252 in Florence which became the first and leading gold coin among the then silver based coins of Europe.

Most guilders circulating around 1700 were silver based coins.
