-is, most obviously, a wikimedia based interactive online dictionary and research data base. Readers who have edited Wikipedia articles will be familiar with the software and its immense advantages: You can edit texts within this database from all around the globe. Your edit will be listed in the page “history” (click tab above). You can modify whatever you find within this database, you can augment it and you can open new articles and link them to articles you found or want to create in the future.+
346 years, to be precise; the earliest Marteau books allow the rough computation whilst the company archive still needs to be looked through one of these days to determine whether the privilege was not actually granted a couple of months earlier — click here for a short history of our company.

-The two big differences between the different international Wikipedia-editions and ''The Marteau Encyclopaedia of the Early Modern Period'' are that we are only interested in a period of the past and that our authors have adopted a rule of editorship: They write under their “real names” and they open “user pages” on which they promote their own work in this field. To ensure this you will be requested to enter your personal Marteau-password (contact us to get one) before you can begin – a barrier and a chance: If you write here, you will work without fear of vandalism and the more unpleasant encounters the bigger Wikipedia projects cannot avoid without giving up what makes them so extremely attractive.+
The story of the web-located http://www.pierre-marteau.com is shorter. The present project was founded in 2001 by Anton Kirchhofer, Martin Mulsow and Olaf Simons as a platform devoted to scholarly explorations of the period 1650-1750. Associated projects are The Marteau Movie-Database opened by Sabine Biebl in 2002 and The 19th-century Marteau initiated by Anton Kirchhofer in 2004.

-Our topic – the period from the invention of the printing press to the beginning of the nineteenth century – is a topic of general interest and one of research done by specialists. We explicitly want to attract the community of specialists (with a perspective on the wider audience we can offer). Do create entries within this dictionary to give insight into your research. There will not be a “too special” or “too scientific” or “too scholarly” to be expected from the participants you will meet on our pages. Do not hesitate to use ''The Marteau Encyclopaedia of the Early Modern Period'' to advertise your research and feel free to comment on research you will find on these pages. The additional, more scholarly project is what we will be trying to offer.+
Though the old company could not resurface without the dot.com in it's domain name, the site is strictly non commercial. -We do especially welcome articles on differences, articles stressing gaps between our present world an the 17th and 18th century world to be encountered on our pages. The fact that all our articles will stay within this past will add to the project's fascination. The link to [[London]] you will set at the Marteau Encyclopedia will be the link to the early modern London with its topics and images, the link to [[money]] will lead into the early modern world of money and monetary politics. The reconstruction of the distant past will be part of our project.+
To transform the old publishing house into a web platform inviting more communication between the participants we decided in 2006 to gradually wikify some of our projects (you find the Marteau-wiki under our new project The Marteau Encyclopædia of the Early Modern Period). The step is problematic as it remains our aim to offer information you can quote – authorised knowledge in a medium of notoriously unreliable information. We have decided therefore to restrict editorship within the wiki to participants who are ready to stand with their names for their work. You will have to contact the editors to open an account under your name – a measure which will in return protect your own work against vandalism and unauthorised modifications: whatever you will publish within the Marteau-wiki will appear connected with your name; all changes will bear the names of those who have made them and who can be contacted within the project and privately via e-mail.

Pierre Marteau, Cologne
Virtual Publisher for over 340 Years

346 years, to be precise; the earliest Marteau books allow the rough computation whilst the company archive still needs to be looked through one of these days to determine whether the privilege was not actually granted a couple of months earlier — click here for a short history of our company.

Marteau Statistics, 13 March 2006, page views per week, the collapse in late 2005 is a mistake of the provider's statistics program

Though the old company could not resurface without the dot.com in it's domain name, the site is strictly non commercial. Whatever you publish with us as a stable html-text with your name on it will be entirely your publication under the label which has always been a meeting place of independent publishers.

We invite contributors to open user pages and to give information about their ongoing work and interests in the period, and we have no objections if they use their pages to advertise their work and research - quite on the contrary: do use our site to promote work done in this field. Contact us with larger projects you might like to venture with us. We will try to support you wherever we can.

Along with the features the wiki-medium has added to this site, we will continue to publish articles and e-texts in definite html-editions – with a strong interest in finding individual designs and effective html-concepts. Contact us if you have texts you would like to publish the old-fashioned way on the web.
