+'''Phillippe de Gentil, Marquis de Langallerie''' spelled also '''Langalerie''' and sometimes '''L'Angallerie''', first baron of Saintonge, was born in Lyon on September 24, 1661. He died imprisoned in Vienna on September 18th, 1717. Some documents also offer La Mothe-Charente, Saintonge, departement Charente, and 1656 for details of his birth. His diaries state, however, clearly that he was born in 1661. One can also read that he died in Raab, today Győr Hungary, which again is not supported.
 +
+This file will give an extensive account of his life or refer to sources for further information. Langallerie marries twice. The first marriage served basically political purposes, the second, performed in 1709 in Berlin, brought the French general who had by then defected France into contact with French protestants and influential Jews.
 +
+Langallerie gained prominence among European religious dissidents in the course his conversion to the reformed faith in 1711. He entered the field of religious controversy in the ensuing events: His wife became mistress of Landgraf Karl of Hessen Kassel. Langallerie himself conversed with Turks, Jews and Protestants in Germany and the Netherlands over questions of the Apocalypse - in which he was ready to play a prominent military role.
 +
+From 1714 to 1716 Langallerie lives in the Netherlands where he builds up a network of support for the greater project of the "Universal Theocracy", a military and religious order that plans a war against the Vatican in Rome. Langallerie's plans to raise an army of 100.000 men and a fleet supported by the Ottoman Empire, both to be secretly led against Rome are eventually betrayed by his secretary, Meyer, whose task it was to translate a the contract with the Ottoman Empire into German. Langallerie, the notorious impostor [[Linange]], number two of the Theocracy, and a ship of settlers under his command are captured in Stade and in Aurich in 1716 and transported to Vienna that same summer.
 +
+The entire case is roughly known among specialists today thanks to the research of Arthur Michel de Boislisle (1898) and John T. O'Connor (1996 and 1999). It is presently part of a research project of the contributors behind this page.

Phillippe de Gentil, Marquis de Langallerie spelled also Langalerie and sometimes L'Angallerie, first baron of Saintonge, was born in Lyon on September 24, 1661.

This file will give an extensive account of his life or refer to sources for further information. Langallerie marries twice. The first marriage served basically political purposes, the second, performed in 1709 in Berlin, brought the French general who had by then defected France into contact with French protestants and influential Jews.

Langallerie gained prominence among European religious dissidents in the course his conversion to the reformed faith in 1711.

From 1714 to 1716 Langallerie lives in the Netherlands where he builds up a network of support for the greater project of the "Universal Theocracy", a military and religious order that plans a war against the Vatican in Rome. Langallerie's plans to raise an army of 100.000 men and a fleet supported by the Ottoman Empire, both to be secretly led against Rome are eventually betrayed by his secretary, Meyer, whose task it was to translate a the contract with the Ottoman Empire into German. Langallerie, the notorious impostor Linange, number two of the Theocracy, and a ship of settlers under his command are captured in Stade and in Aurich in 1716 and transported to Vienna that same summer.

The entire case is roughly known among specialists today thanks to the research of Arthur Michel de Boislisle (1898) and John T. O'Connor (1996 and 1999). It is presently part of a research project of the contributors behind this page.

Attributed to Langallerie

Two political memoires were attributed to Langallerie in the course of the 18the century. Both are difficult to come to terms with. The first attribution appears in England and it is not quite clear whether it also appeared on a French publication of the same title. The English title is

  • The memoirs of the marquess de Langallerie. Translated from the French (London: R. Burrough/ J. Baker/ E. Curll, 1708), 324 pp. Google Books
  • The Second Edition Translated from the French, and continued to this present time (London: J. Round/ N. Cliff, 1710), 416 pp. estc.bl.uk
  • The Second Edition Translated from the French, and continued to this present time (London: W. Taylor, 1712), 416 pp.estc.bl.uk

W. H. McBurney (1960) stated this to be the original publication: "Translated from La Guerre d'Italie, ou Mémoirs du Comte D*** (Cologne: Pierre Marteau, 1703).<ref>William Harley McBurney, A Check List of English Prose Fiction. 1700-1739 (Cambridge, Mass., 1960), entry 37, S.16.</ref> The ESTC corrects this estc.bl.uk – The source is actually (attributed in most catalogues to Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras): La Guerre d'Espagne, de Bavière et de Flandre, ou mémoires du Marquis D***. Contenant ce qui s’est passé … jusqu’à la fin de compagne de 1706 (Cologne: Pierre Marteau, 1707), a book, that went throug several rivalling Dutch editions between 1708 and 1713. The publisher Pierre Marteau offer the plattform to two competitors under his name.

The English versions of La Guerre d'Espagne that bear Langallarie's name are harshly abridged. The 1710 "Second Edition" has an additional concluding chapter, that adds newspaper history without a further authorial identity. The 1712 "Second Edition" is simply the 1710 edition with an updated title page and reference to a new publisher and seller.

We have but one indication of a French Langallerie-attribution offered by the National Library of Australia's Catalogue:

  • La guerre d’Italie, ou Memoires historiques, politiques, et galants du marquis de Langalerie: Contenant quantite de choses particulieres & secretes, qui de se sont passes dans les cours d'Allemagne, de France, d'Espagne, de Savote, & d'Italie: Avec plusieurs intrigues amoureuses de son Altesse royale (Cologne: Pierre-Marteau, 1709). Shelfmark: RB PEL 616 catalogue.nla.gov.au

This catalogue entry could not be verified in an e-mail exchange.

In 1743, long after Langallerie's death there appeared - without reference to the previous titles the following French memoir - translated in 1747 into German:

The book offers - allegedly - Langallerie's autobiography as Meyer his secretary receved it shortly before Langallerie's death. Meyer claims to be the author of the concluding remarks, so the text's indication.
