History
For over 400 years the basic Spanish currency unit, though pieces of eight reals, "Pesos", were the predominant coin. From the 17th century onwards reals circulated in plata-versions of good silver (counting 51, and later 64 maravedis) and as "real de vellon" minted of billon (of about 51% silver) with a value of 34 maravedis. Provincial realas could count even less of then that.
