Lieselotte von der Pfalz reports in her letters (14 June 1699) that the manuscript circulated at the French court before the the first edition appeared in The Hague. Fénelon's servant reportedly brought the manuscript to the printer. Translations into English and German appeared immediately. The first editions still passed as criticism of governement of Louis XIV. This judgement soon changed. The roman à clef turned into a prose epic rivalling Homer's and Vergil's works. Only after the author's death a first authorised edition appeared in 1717, it offered a new organisation of the individual chapters.
English and German publishers offered versions in their own languages and in the original French. Dutch publishers seem to have taken care of the less popular translations into Spanish and Italian.
